Demetrio Comuzzi first studied with Piero Farulli in Fiesole, graduating from the Accademia Chigiana in Siena with full honours. He continued his viola studies with Dino Asciolla, first at the Festival di Città di Castello, then in Rome at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. In chamber music he was coached by Riccardo Brengola in Siena and in Rome. Comuzzi has won a number of prizes, including First Prize at the First National Viola Competition in Vittorio Veneto (1977), the “Guido Monaco” Prize (Talla, 1980), the “Peterlongo” Prize (Siena, 1980), First Prize at the International Competition “Vittorio Gui” in Florence (1980) and First Prize at the International Competition for String Quartets in Rome (1981). Since 1985 Comuzzi has been a member of the Nuovo Quartetto Italiano, heir to the Italian quartet tradition and considered by the critics to be one of the best quartets of the world. A recipient of various awards, the group was decorated with the gold medal by the President of the Italian Republic during the European Year of Music in 1986.
