MATAMOROS, DIEGO The baritone Diego Matamoros joined the roster of the Metropolitan Opera in 2007 to cover Marco in their new production of Gianni Schicchi. In 2008 he returned to make his début as Potapitch in Prokofiev’s The Gambler under Valery Gergiev, and also to cover rôles in Macbeth, War and Peace, and Manon Lescaut. As winner of The Opera Foundation’s 2008 competition, he will spend the 2009 season in residence at the Teatro Regio di Torino, where he will appear as Schaunard in La Bohème, among many other rôles. He was also recently a featured artist on the PBS Sunday Arts “Young Opera” series. While a student at Yale Opera he performed numerous rôles, including Demetrius in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, and Smirnoff in Walton’s The Bear.
