JANSSEN, HERBERT (1892 - 1922)

Herbert Janssen, baritone

Born in Cologne in 1892, the baritone Herbert Janssen made his début at the Berlin Staatsoper in 1922 and continued to appear with the company for the following sixteen years, while establishing a wider career with appearances at Bayreuth and Covent Garden. He left Germany in 1938 and made his début at the New York Metropolitan Opera the following year as Wotan in Siegfried, continuing with the company until his retirement in 1952. He died in New York in 1965.
