ALESSI, JOSEPH Joseph Alessi has made a career in the orchestra, as a soloist, recitalist and teacher of the instrument. While still in high school in San Rafael, California he soloed with the San Francisco Symphony and continued his studies at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. He performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the L’Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal before being appointed Principal Trombone of the New York Philharmonic in 1985. In 1990 Alessi made his solo début with the Philharmonic, playing Paul Creston’s Fantasy for Trombone, and in 1992 premièred the Pulitzer Prize-winning Trombone Concerto of Christopher Rouse, commissioned for the 150th Anniversary of the Philharmonic. In 2000, Alessi was soloist in James Pugh’s Trombone Concerto. As a guest soloist, Alessi has performed with orchestras throughout the United States, Europe and the Far East. He has been a featured artist at numerous brass festivals, from Lille, France to Tempe, Arizona.
