NAPOLI, MATTEO The Italian pianist Matteo Napoli, a native of Salerno, graduated at the Giordano Conservatoire in Foggia and captured worldwide attention by triumph in many competitions, including First Prize in the International Liszt Competition in Lucca in 1986. He has performed in Europe, New York, Mexico City, San Paolo, Japan, Australia, China and Malaysia and appeared as a soloist with many orchestras, including the Orchestra da Camera di Firenze, Brasov Philharmonic, Ofunam Philharmonic, Tirana Opera House, Cyprus Chamber, NSO of Malaysia, and in New Zealand, the Manukau Symphony Orchestra and Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. In Auckland in 2003 he gave the first modern performance of the Piano Concerto No. 6 by Ferdinand Ries, with Uwe Grodd as conductor, followed by the European première in Romania and a further performance with the NSO of Malaysia in 2004. Since 2002 he has served as Artistic Director of the ‘Pianosolo’ International Piano Festival in Salerno. In March 2008 he took over the position of Music Director of the Bay of Islands Academy of Music, New Zealand.
