Mette Ejsing

Mette Ejsing, considered one of Europe's leading contraltos, has gained prominence on the international opera scene with performances at La Scala, the Vienna State Opera, the Berlin State Opera, and the Bayreuth Festival. She has won several prestigious awards, including a prize from the Carl and Anne Marie Nielsen Foundation and the Danish Music Critics Award. Highlights of Mette Esjing's past seasons include singing Poul Ruders' City in the Sea (written for her and based on writings of Edgar Allen Poe), in Århus (Denmark); Hindemith's Sancta Susanna in concert with Riccardo Muti (Ravenna); performances of Mary in Der fliegende Holländer with Staatsoper Berlin and Teatro alla Scala; the Mozart Requiem (Rome); Braxton Blake's Dorothy Parker Songs (written for her) with the Århus Symfoniorkester; Erda in Das Rheingold with the Vienna Staatsoper and the Staatstheater Stuttgart; Klytaemnestra in Elektra and Mary in Der fliegende Holländer in Napoli (Teatro San Carlo); Erda and the First Norn in Der Ring des Nibelungen at the Bayreuth Festival, Quickly in Falstaff with Atlanta Opera; Erda in Siegfried with the Bilbao Opera; Annina in Der Rosenkavalier (Brussels); Humperdinck's Königskinder with Jeffrey Tate at Teatro San Carlo di Napoli; Erda and the First Norn in Der Ring des Nibelungen with Daniel Barenboim and the Staatsoper Berlin on tour in Japan; Szenen aus Goethes Faust with RAI Torino and Jeffrey Tate; Songs and Dances of Death (Copenhagen); Gaea in Daphne (Linz); Gertrude in Marschner's Hans Heiling with Dennis Russell Davies and the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra; a concert performance of Elektra in Tivoli (Copenhagen); Alexander Nevsky with the Danish Radio Orchestra; and Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 at the Vienna Konzerthaus. Her orchestral engagements have included Moussorgsky's Songs and Dances of Death; Mahler's Symphony No. 2 in Toronto and St. Louis; Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 at La Scala with Riccardo Muti; Mahler's Symphony No. 3 with Valery Gergiev on tour with the Rotterdam Philharmonic; Der Ring des Nibelungen with Daniel Barenboim in Berlin; Nicholas Maw's Scenes and Arias with the San Francisco Symphony with Roger Norrington; Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky in Evian, France, with Mstislav Rostropovich; and the Wesendonck Lieder with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra.
