SALO, PER (b 1962 )Per Salo was born in 1962 in Copenhagen and began playing piano
and organ at the age of nine. He took his diploma as an organist at the Royal
Danish Academy of Music in 1985. In Denmark Per Salo has studied Esther Vagning
and John Damgaard, and in Italy with Professor Mirtia Herrera. From 1987 until
1989 he studied at the Juilliard School of Music in New York. Then he took a
Masters Degree in Piano Performance in 1989. After studies abroad Per Salo
competed for admission to the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, where
he was engaged to play piano, organ and harpsichord. Per Salo has won many prizes
and grants, including the Gladsaxe Music Prize and the Danish
Music CriticsArtists Prize (both in 1990). He has given concerts both
as a soloist and as a chamber musician in Scandinavia, Italy, Spain, Greece,
Poland and the USA. As a soloist Per Salo has recorded CDs of music by Chades
Ives (Concorde Sonata), Niels Viggo Bentzon (Piano Works) and
Per Nørgård (Piano Works), all for the Kontrapunkt label. In 1997
Chandos released Per Salos recording of Per Nørgårds piano concerto Concerto
in Due Tempi, which he premiered with the Danish National Radio Symphony
Orchestra when the composer was awarded the Léonie Sonning Music Prize in
1996.
