BISCHOFF, ROMAIN

The bass-baritone Romain Bischoff studied singing at the Conservatoires of Liège, The Hague and Paris. With an extended award of the Netherlands Music Prize he was a pupil of Christa Ludwig, Walter Berry and Aafje Heijnis, among others. He has appeared in opera-houses in France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, the United States, and The Netherlands and specialises in contemporary music. He has on several occasions been a participant in the Venice Biennale and the Holland Festival. At the Netherlands Opera he appeared as ‘I’ in Schnittke’s Life with an Idiot, as Shakespeare in the first performance of Boudewijn Tarenskeen’s Dark Lady and in Aribert Reimann’s King Lear. Theatre and concert performances have included Ligeti’s Aventures / Nouvelles Aventures in Paris, Brussels, Rouen, Zurich and Amsterdam, and the oratorio The Hamlet Machine of Georges Aperghis in Athens and Stuttgart. He has collaborated with some of the most distinguished musicians of our time. Since 2002 he has served as leader and senior lecturer at the newly established Netherlands Vocal Laboratory for Contemporary Music in Amsterdam.
