AJIMI, TORU

Born in 1932 in Yokohama, Ajimi started to study shamisen in 1937 with Rokukuro Kineya and from 1947 with Shotaro Yamada. In 1952 he entered the Music Department of Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music and continued his studies of Japanese traditional music. In 1962 he performed in Moscow and Helsinki. In 1987 he was appointed Professor of the Music Department of Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music. In 1999 he was chosen President of TOUON, the performing group of nagauta organized mainly by graduates of Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music. In 2000 he was appointed Professor Emeritus of the same university. In 2001 he formed a performing group mainly made up of young musicians of various schools, and was chosen as its leader. He has won many awards, including the 1986 National Arts Festival Award and the 2005 Exxon Mobil Music Award. He is currently a member of the board of directors of the Nagauta Association.
