He has been variously described as the " the hardest-working man in show business ", "Mr. Dynamite", and even the "Godfather of Soul". These are just some of the many honorary names given to the singer and show star James Brown in acknowledgement of his life's work. Born in Barnwell, South Carolina, in 1933. Over more than four decades, James Brown has inspired countless young musicians, won millions of fans, and has become the best-selling rhythm-and-blues musician in the history of pop music.

This documentary depicts James Brown right from his earliest childhood through the years of his original musical success, to the era of his stardom, and continuing into the broad social and political involvement which was inspired among other things by the assassination of Martin Luther King. Many of his contemporary witnesses including B. B. King, Reverend Jesse Jackson, Stevie Wonder, biographer Bruce Tucker and many other important personalities from the world of American music and show-business express their feelings about James Brown, who also gets to speak for himself. The result is an authentic depiction of his life, his music and his charisma.
