La vie parisienne (Paris Life), operetta in 3 acts
Offenbach wrote a hundred lighter stage works before a dramatised version of E.T.A Hoffmann's fantastical love stories, entitled Tales of Hoffmann, gave him the urge to write in large-scale, serious vein. This opera and many of his humorous, ironic and even satirical operettas remain, as ever, on the performance schedules of international music theatres - and first and foremost among these is the amusing musical portrayal of life in the French capital at the time of Napoleon III, La vie parisienne (Paris Life ) of 1866. This opéra bouffe in five acts was first performed on 31 October 1866, at the Théâtre du Palais Royal in Paris.
This production by Opéra Lyon recaptures the long-lost glory of the Belle Époque, which Jacques Offenbach immortalised so unforgettably in La vie parisienne.
