- Shostakovich wrote his Symphony No. 9 at the close of World War II. Stalin undoubtedly expected a triumphal work; instead, Shostakovich wrote a very sarcastic, light-hearted piece that stands in stark contrast to his often grim war symphonies, the Seventh and the Eight.
- Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 was his last composition, first performed barely a week before his mysterious and tragic death. It remains one of his most popular works and contains some of his most appealing and emotional music.
- Maestro Solti leads this sparkling and energetic performance, showing once more why his magnetic personality and his high-intense way of conducting made him one of the most acclaimed orchestral conductors of the 20th century.
