If any production in the world of music since the dawn of this new millennium has gone down in history as a full-blown scandal, it is Hans Neuenfels' production of the operetta "Die Fledermaus" by Johann Strauss at the Salzburger Festspiele.

Neuenfels, born in Krefeld 1941 and long regarded as the "enfant terrible" of the theater scene, was not the first person in the history of "Fledermaus" adaptations who has dared to scrape away at the work's surface. This time, however, unconventional directing was accompanied by substantial alterations in the libretto. Neuenfels wrote new dialog, incorporating texts from other authors: Karl Kraus, Gottfried Benn and Hugo Ball.

Marc Minkowski has become one of the leading representatives of the Originalklangszene (pioneers of a new approach to baroque music with his "Musiciens du Louvre" founded in 1982. He leads an intriguing soloist ensemble in this extraordinary production.
