First performed in America in 1921, Prokoviev's opera Love of Three Oranges - a provocative and at the same time ironic response to opera form - has long been a favourite with theatre directors and audience alike. In this work Prokoviev succeeded in composing a theatrically sophisticated music of vivid gesture, with rousing verses, which is both humorous and slightly absurd. Top-ranking artists took part in this present production, recorded at the Opéra National de Lyon in 1989. Kent Nagano, ideally matched to this piece, conducted many outstanding singers including Gabriel Bacquier (King/Herald) and Jean-Luc Viala (the Prince).
The recording, made at same time as the performances, won Grammophone Magazine's 1990 'Record of the Year' award.
