In one of the most glittering events of the 1992 opera season, the Glyndebourne
Festival Theatre played host to a sensational Gala Evening before closing its
doors for a two year development period as a new and larger theatre was constructed.
In the charming setting of this unique operatic venue, the house and gardens
of the Glyndebourne estate in England's rolling Sussex countryside, a host of
opera's leading personalities gathered to provide an evening of unsurpassed
musical pleasure, in the presence of HRH Prince Charles. The singers taking
part included Montserrat Caballé, Felicity Lott, Ruggero Raimondi, Benjamin
Luxon, Frederica von Stade and Cynthia Haymon - all of whom made memorable appearances
at Glyndebourne in the very early days of their careers. The London Philharmonic,
one of the world's greatest orchestras and Glyndebourne's resident orchestra
since 1964, was conducted by Glyndebourne's Musical Director Andrew Davis, and
his predecessor, Bernard Haitink.
The programme includes some of the most well-known operatic pieces like Mozart's
'Voi che sapete' from Le nozze di Figaro, Verdi's 'Salce, salce' and 'Ave Maria'
from Otello, Rossini's 'Un voce poco fa' from Il barbiere di Siviglia, and George
Gershwin's 'Summertime' from Porgy and Bess.
