The ageless story of Romeo and Juliet has been told countless times and in every possible variation. So why should anybody buy another Romeo and Juliet DVD? Quite simply: The Bolshoi at the Bolshoi.

The outstanding choreography of Yuri Grigorovich focuses mainly on the emotions and the passion of the star-crossed lovers, rather than the surrounding circumstances. Everything is expressed by dance. This classic ballet also provides the perfect showcase for Grigorovich's wife, the magnificent Natalya Bessmertnova. As one of Russia's legendary soloists, the prima ballerina is - in spite of her age - an enchanting Juliet. Aleksandr Vetrov must also be mentioned for a masterful performance as Tybalt.

"Miss Bessmertnova has a magical quality that singles her out from every other performer, a mixture of intensity of feeling and effortless projection of dance ideas. Dark-haired, huge-eyed, with long limbs and a supple torso, she is a perfect dance instrument …" The Financial Times

The Bolshoi Ballet company performed at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in July and August 2004, their first major London season since 1999.
