Turkish, German, Italian and Oriental influences intertwine as Arthaus present
another Mozart gem in their Glyndebourne series, as well as a chance to see
Willard White in one of his earliest roles.
Once described as "an irresistible eighteenth century vaudeville",
Mozart's three-act opera was commissioned for Vienna's National-Singspiel, the
newly-established German opera company. The story revolves around the rescue
by Belmonte of his fiancée Constanze, who was captured by pirates and
sold to the harem of the Turkish Pasha.
In the Glyndebourne Entführung aus dem Serail from 1980, comically yet
sensitively staged by Peter Wood, Kuhn led his excellent soloists to an ensemble
performance of great unity which was interspersed with exact and beautifully
worked dialogue. The singpiel, this hybrid of music and word, is realised here
in the most convincing fashion.
