- This film sees the world première video recording of Penderecki's first opera The Devils of Loudun, filmed shortly after its world première in 1969 at the Hamburg State Opera.
- This film adaptation, recorded in the same year shortly after the première, reunified the original cast including the wonderful Tatiana Troyanos in "a performance that radiates competence and commitment" (Gramophone).
- The plot, based on the book by Aldous Huxley, explores subjects including sexuality, religion, fanaticism and justice in a deep and sometimes disturbing series of powerful scenes. It is no surprise therefore that film director William Friedkin also chose to use the music in his film The Exorcist.
