  • Il matrimonio segreto is Cimarosa's most famous opera buffa which is reputed to have won immense admiration from Emperor Leopold II at its first performance in 1792 - the Austrian Emperor liked this masterpiece so much that he ordered it to be played again from the beginning!
  • The Drottningholm Court Theatre Orchestra, an outstanding orchestra for early music, is specialized in music of the 17th and 18th century - the authentic interpretation of Griffiths and his musicians sounds extremely fresh and colourful, and the playing is always full of energy and contrasts
  • Beautiful production, with an elegant and colourful staging - the stage direction is sensitive to the music's flow and brings a welcome clarity to the plot's many twists and deceptions
  • Recorded at the exquisite Rococo palace theatre in Schwetzingen, built in 1752
  • This production had already won international acclaim when staged in Paris, Stockholm and London - where it won the Olivier Award for Best Opera Production
"In the hands of Hilary Griffiths, conducting the orchestra of the Drottningholm Court Theatre, the score is treated with the right combination of vigor, suavity and occasional, humanising, period-instrument fatigue. This is a real performance, and its sense of immediate play, both in the pit and on-stage, is acute."-- Opera News
