Volume 5 of Lehmann’s Lieder recordings made in America features
her heartfelt, spontaneous and highly
individual 1942 rendition of
Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin (minus Ungeduld). In Die schöne
Müllerin Lehmann’s judicious use of
portamento and her wonderful
feeling for the text make her
performance one to treasure. One of
the leading Strauss interpreters of
her own or any era, Lehmann invests
the four popular songs heard on this
disc with a big and generous tone, as
in Allerseelen, but also with lightness,
softness and restraint, as in the
ineffably beautiful Morgen! These
recordings, made between 1941 and
1942, truly represent the apex of
Lehmann’s art as a master
interpreter of Lieder.
