About this Recording

MOISEIWITSCH, Benno: Acoustic Recordings 1916-1925 (Moiseiwitsch, Vol. 10)

This tenth volume in the Naxos Moiseiwitsch Edition contains all of the discs he made by the acoustic process of composers other than Chopin. Despite the primitive recording process, the engineers captured a fair amount of detail, and with modern restoration techniques and mint copies of the discs some astonishing results can be obtained. Made right at the end of the acoustic era, this 1925 recording of Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1 became obsolete almost as soon as it was issued owing to the vast improvement in sound quality that was obtainable with the introduction of electrical recording a few months later. Nevertheless, it captures Moiseiwitsch’s youthful energy and vitality, as well as some typically poetic playing in the slow movement.
