Art and Music: Masters of the Modern Age, Vol. 1 (3-CD Box Set)
The intersection of art and music seems natural – many composers “see” music in colours while artists often paint in a manner like the flow of music – yet great artists of the past seldom mentioned their favourite composers or vice-versa. In this CD series, Hugh Griffith has combined traceable influences with imaginative musical representations. Thus van Gogh, who seldom interacted with anyone but admired Wagner, is represented by that composer and by works reflecting a tender, lonely or searching quality, while social butterfly Degas is represented by his interests, opera and ballet. Cézanne, who fit somewhere between – he was well educated and socialized, but dressed down and was either quiet or sullen – is represented by composers with a similar shyness or the kind of brusque originality of his paintings. This series, enhanced by the well-chosen and beautifully reproduced art gallery, makes a splendid introduction to classical music for many young adults, particularly those interested in visual art. – Lynn René Bayley, Fanfare
