Best-known for The Four Seasons, Vivaldi has been credited with the development of the Italian solo concerto as a popular form in the early 18th century. The Flute Concertos here recorded were important pieces for an increasingly popular instrument, the transverse flute. The concertos have descriptive titles which are musically evoked, as in The Four Seasons. These charming concertos are important documents of performance technique yet examples of the composer’s most imaginative writing.
