WEISS, S.L.: Lute Sonatas, Vol. 2 (Barto) - Nos. 5, 25, 50
The Sonatas form part of a prodigious output (far and away the largest single body of lute music in the instrument’s history). The three recorded here represent the once near-legendary Weiss in the spring, summer and autumn of his career and reflect both his unrivalled virtuosity and his exceptional craftsmanship. In style and feel, his finest music is in many ways close to Bach’s, while at the same time anticipating the simpler ‘galant’ style of early Mozart and Haydn.
