MOZART: Mass No. 18 in C Minor, K. 427, 'Great' / Kyrie in D Minor, K. 341

At the age of six Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart made his début as a performer in Munich, and by the time of his tenth birthday a considerable number of his works had been published. By the time of his death, his vast array of scores included operas, symphonies, keyboard concertos and string quartets. The catalogue of sacred music is extensive, and includes a series of Masses, the earliest written at the age of twelve. In the early 1780s Mozart embarked on his most ambitious project in this genre, the C minor Mass. Unlike most of his music at that time, it was not composed to a commission, but simply to fulfil а desire to write a large-scale sacred work. Though it remained incomplete, the sheer scope of his vision has earned the work the title, the ‘Great’ C minor Mass. It is scored for two sopranos, tenor and bass soloists, choir with orchestra and organ.
