BRUCKNER, A.: Study Symphony / Symphony No. 4: IV. Finale, "Volksfest" (1878 version, ed. L. Nowak) (Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Tintner)

Though Anton Bruckner is now regarded as one of the great symphonists of the 19th century, he was plagued with doubt as to his own capabilities. This self-doubt was fuelled by the adverse comments of critics, and by friends who thought they could help by changing the content of his works. He composed nine numbered symphonies, the ninth remaining unfinished at the time of his death in 1896. To that cycle we now add the early ‘Study Symphony’ and the second of three versions of the finale for Symphony No. 4. Though Bruckner was 39 by the time he composed the Symphony in F minor, he looked upon it as a student work. In reality it is a well-shaped score which carries the typical Brucknerian hallmarks. The work remained unperformed in his lifetime.
