HARTY: Irish Symphony (An) / With the Wild Geese / In Ireland
Sir Hamilton Harty (1879–1941) was the foremost Irish composer of his generation and first came to prominence in the early 1900s after moving to London. He was also a brilliant accompanist and conductor, whose notable association with the Hallé Orchestra from 1920–1933 resulted in it being considered one of the finest orchestras in Europe. Written in a late Romantic idiom, the three orchestral pieces on this CD are all programmatic works based on Irish themes or legends, and highlight the composer’s undoubted melodic gifts and orchestral flair.
