RAWSTHORNE: Cello Concerto / Oboe Concerto / Symphonic Studies
Rawsthorne’s Symphonic Studies, virtually a concerto for orchestra and dating from 1938, was his first work for full orchestra, a remarkably assured accomplishment. Its five linked movements bring variations of the opening material. The lyrical Concerto for Oboe and Strings of 1947, with its seminal opening based on the traditional French overture form, is here included with the later and equally lyrical Cello Concerto of 1965, a work marked by its deft handling of orchestral colour and impeccable craftsmanship.
