MAHLER, G.: Symphony No. 10 (Wheeler, 1966 version) (Polish National Radio Symphony, Olson)
Mahler’s Tenth Symphony has had a long and chequered history, at least five attempts having been made to realise a performing edition which includes the three movements the composer left incomplete at the time of his death. The version presented on this recording is that of Joe Wheeler, and is, in texture at least, the closest to Mahler’s original manuscript, in retaining what Wheeler regarded as its kinship with the other more leanly orchestrated works of the composer’s last years. The prevailing moods of the music itself are of unease and anguish, and some commentators have inferred a connection between this and Mahler’s state of mind at the dramatic upheavals he was experiencing in his personal life.
