RUBINSTEIN, A.: Symphony No. 3 / Eroica Fantasia (Slovak Radio Symphony, Stankovsky)
Anton Rubinstein’s powerful Third Symphony stands between two of his named symphonies, the Second, subtitled the ‘Ocean’, and the Fourth, called the ‘Dramatic’. Although it lacks the type of descriptive programme that Rubinstein gave to some of his best-known orchestral works, it is nonetheless an immediately accessible and finely wrought piece of music. It is composed in an orchestral style that tends to look back to Mendelssohn. In addition, it possesses the passionate and noble character that Rubinstein often gave to his orchestral works. The Eroica Fantasia, a work written some time after the Symphony, is equally distinguished and strongly felt.
