TURINA: Sinfonia sevillana / Danzas fantasticas / Ritmos
Turina revealed a genuine talent for the composition of picturesque music inspired by images of pastoral Spain. His orchestration brilliantly made use of French impressionist techniques, and his melodic material was at its best genuinely evocative. The Sinfonía sevillana is Turina’s orchestral masterpiece and one of the first important works of this kind to be produced in Spain in the twentieth century. La procesión del Rocío describes a Spanish country festival and Turina’s music admirably catches the authentic note of rural pageantry and popular exaltation. The Danzas fantásticas consists of three sumptuously orchestrated dances, the second one of which has a soft, languid Andalusian character.
