A pupil of Nadia Boulanger, Lennox Berkeley came from the same generation of British composers as Walton and Tippett but it was his connections with France that gave his music such a distinctive personality. Berkeley’s output includes a wealth of fine chamber and instrumental music, full of wit, vitality and charm. In particular the Concertino for flute, violin, cello and piano with its mixture of intimacy, understatement and spicy harmony is one of the composer’s most meticulously crafted works.
