BRITISH TUBA CONCERTOS
Although the tuba enjoyed some success in Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique and the operas of Wagner, it did not emerge as a solo instrument until the 20th century. Vaughan Williams’ Tuba Concerto, a work of originality and freshness that belies the 82-year-old composer’s advanced years, is as near a classic as it can be in a limited field. Edward Gregson, one of Britain’s most successful composers, has built a reputation writing music for brass and wind bands, with a growing catalogue of orchestral music.
