HICKEY: Left at the Fork in the Road / Flute Sonata
Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1970, Sean Hickey’s earliest music education began at age 12 with an electric guitar, a Peavey amp and a stack of early Van Halen records. At university, Hickey turned his focus to the study of jazz guitar, theory and composition. A student of James Hartway, James Lentini and Justin Dello Joio, he has earned a solid reputation in the cutting edge new music circles of New York. Hickey is the recipient of numerous coveted awards and grants, and his successful, young career has led him to compose for both film and stage. This recording features a striking selection of Hickey’s solo and chamber works. Of Sagesse, which draws from the famous text by French poet Paul Verlaine, Hickey writes, “I wished to find a text that contained a strong element of music within it, not necessarily in the meaning of the words, but rather an inner music found in great poetry that all but begs to be set…”
