Polish-born Mieczysław Weinberg was probably the best-kept musical secret in the former Soviet Union. Only in recent years has his stature been recognised beyond Russia’s borders. His cello works, four of which are included on this disc, are a major addition to the genre. Excitable one minute and impassive the next, they resemble Shostakovich without the irony, and have been likened in importance to the solo cello works of J.S. Bach.
