PALOMO: Cantos del alma / Sinfonia a Granada |
Lorenzo Palomo is one of the most successful contemporary Spanish composers. His Cantos del alma (Songs of the Soul) are settings of four poems by Juan Ramón Jiménez, "a composition in which voice, clarinet and orchestra... establish a poetic dialogue, both intimate and idyllic". Palomo's Sinfonia a Granada (Granada Symphony) was written in response to a commission from the area's regional government. The composer himself has written, "I have been faithful to the most authentic Andalusian music, introducing a number of Arabic and Hebraic melismas as well as cadences characteristics of flamenco".
