George Enescu was annoyed by the immense popularity of his Romanian Rhapsody No. 1 because it made him into a ‘one-tune composer’. This collection of piano music is a welcome reminder of the many other fascinating stylistic strands that colour his work. Seriously under-rated today, he exerted a powerful influence on all those who came under his spell, including Yehudi Menuhin, for whom Enescu remained ‘the greatest musician’.
