From the explosive opening of the famous overture, reminiscent of a volley of champagne corks, through to the surging energy of the 'Fledermaus Waltz' and the many comic numbers, Die Fledermaus ('The Bat') is full of exuberance. The title character is Eisenstein, who is about to be imprisoned for tax misdemeanours, but is persuaded by his friend Falke to delay his imprisonment by attending a ball at the house of Prince Orlofsky in the guise of a bat. This sets the tone for a sparkling operetta, full of fun and escapism.
