A Film dedicated to the great ballets by Rudolf Nureyev performed at the Opera National de Paris
TDK this month turns to La Bayadere in its continuing exploration of the ballets of Nureyev, with this documentary based on the stunningly opulent production of 2002.
When Nureyev created his choreography for the Paris opera, he was able to fall back on the original sources. In order to give his dramatic scenes the greatest authenticity possible, he not only used Petipa's notes, which are kept at the museum of the Barushin Theatre in Moscow, but reconstructed Ludwig Minkus' original score.
La Bayadere proved to be a perfect showcase for the diverse talents of the Paris company, which had become arguably the best ballet ensemble in the world since Nureyev had been appointed Artistic Director ten years earlier.
