When this Munich concert was recorded on July 17, 1993 Jamal had just celebrated his 63rd birthday. Jamal's musical language, which has always been unmistakably independent through the years has become even more original and at times even explosive. His playing is soaked with extreme contrasts and has far more harmonic corners and rhythmic edges than during his youth. His improvisations seem erratic, but on closer inspection are quite logical and need a fully concentrated listener, who will be surprised by Jamal with the whole spectrum from almost cocktail to already avant-garde.
The concert is filled with three of the leader's originals and four standards and reminds one of the album "Chicago Revisited" recorded a year earlier also with bassist John Heard and drummer Yoron Israel. With its arresting joy and unexpected turns, the performance easily demonstrates Jamal's undeniable rank.
