Directed by the incomparable Franco Zeffirelli and featuring one of the new stars of opera, Russian-born Marina Domashenko, this passionate tale of the self-willed gypsy Carmen is set against the imposing backdrop of a Roman amphitheatre lit by the flickering flames of candles. It was recorded in July 2003 on a warm summer evening and thousands of spectators were present to watch Bizet's most famous opera performed in a riot of colour.

"Having found the voice a fine one and a well-schooled one, I might only add that [Marina Domashenko] is a very musical singer and conclude that she has all the requisites to become a major presence in our theatres over the next couple of decades."
