Of the many and various events staged in 2001 in Busseto (Verdi's birthplace)
to mark the centenary of the composer's death, this performance of Falstaff
must surely count as one of the undisputed highlights.
In the intimate atmosphere of the Teatro Verdi, the ensemble of La Scala, Milan,
under its principal conductor Riccardo Muti, Falstaff provides a veritable
musical feast.
Featuring a superb cast, including amongst others 31-year-old shooting star
Ambrogio Maestri, the dashing young tenor Juan Diego Flórez and internationally
acclaimed Barbara Frittoli.
Falstaff is the last opera written by the Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi,
who did so much to influence the history of music in the 19th century.
