Having been spectacularly successful with performances of Orpheus in the Underworld
and La Belle Hélène at the Théâtre de Châtelet,
Mark Minkowski now presents a programme that is a mixture of well-loved and
popular pieces and forgotten masterworks.
The star of the evening was undoubtedly the Swedish mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie
von Otter, who is one of the most versatile and charismatic singers of her generation.
Given the success of Offenbach's dramatic works, his numerous pieces of dance
music are almost forgotten. However, they too are proof of the composer's talent
to invent melodies in abundance.
Concert also includes the Infernal Galop (Can-Can) from Orphee aux
Enfers and the wonderful Belle nuit, ô nuit d'amour (barcarolle)
from The Tales of Hoffman.
