The latest in our Voices of Our Time series, the American soprano Barbara Bonney brings us a Lieder recital of a poignant intimacy this month.
One of the great sopranos of her generation, Barbara Bonney is a Lieder interpreter of rare intelligence and powerful expressiveness, as well as an opera performer of remarkable ability; her favoured roles, such as Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier, Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro, and Pamina in Die Zauberflote, have garnered her huge praise and devoted fans.
Lieder singing is her first love, where the words of the songs are as important to her as the music. Bonney's performance is borne out by her words: "in Lieder recitals ¡K you can practically reach out and touch your audience ¡K and the formidable energy that comes back from an audience concentrating on your music and poetry is truly invigorating."
In this recital, Barbara Bonney is accompanied by pianist Malcolm Martineau,
whom she describes as "the Rolls Royce of accompanists". She here performs Robert Schumann's Dichterliebe and a cycle of Scandinavian songs.
