Summer Concert from the Berlin Waldbuhne
In June 2002, for their annual outdoor concert at the Waldbuhne, the Berliner Philharmoniker, under the direction of Mariss Jansons, gave the audience the chance to hear "A Night of Encores", sharing the platform with one of the best violinists in the world.
Accompanied by the orchestra with the lightest of touches, Vadim Repin played nothing but encores, with verve and a sense of mischief. The resulting lighthearted mood reciprocated by the audience even before the ritual of lighting candles as dusk fell is palpable, even through the medium of this DVD.
Repin set the ball rolling with Wieniawski's Polonaise, Op. 4, two balladesque rarities by Tchaikovsky kept it going, and a short rest for the soloist was followed by Kreisler's wonderful Tambourin chinois, a smart tango by Carlos Gardel (in a film-score arrangement by John Williams), and finally Paganini's virtuoso Carnevale di Venezia. And 20,000 people, linking arms and swaying from side to side, melted into the mood of the summer evening.
