Michael Schade as Tito, supported by Vesselina Kasarova, Dorothea Röschmann and Barbara Bonney all provide emotionally-driven performances with Nikolaus Harnoncourt conducting proceedings. Martin Kušej, who is acclaimed for his theatre productions and has been head of the Salzburg Festival’s drama department since 2005, directs the production, with Jens Killian’s stage design hinting at totalitarianism in the 20th century with the emperor’s palace suggesting fascist-style interiors.
