Kamran Ince

Winner of the Prix de Rome and Lili Boulanger Prize, Kamran Ince was born in Montana to American/Turkish parents. Brought up in Turkey, he trained at the Ankara and Izmir State Conservatories (theory, cello, piano), before returning to America at the beginning of the 1980s to work with Christopher Rouse and Joseph Schwantner at Oberlin and the Eastman School of Music, gaining his doctorate. Professor of Composition at the University of Memphis, he is Co-Director of the Dr Erol er Center for Advanced Music Research (MIAM), Istanbul Technical University, and Founder-Director of the Istanbul Modern Music Ensemble. His compositions include, most recently, Istathenople for bozouki, mandolin, clarinet and new music ensemble commissioned by Present Music, Strange Stone commissioned by Relache of Philadelphia and the Commissioning USA Fund, Concerto for Orchestra, Turkish Instruments and Voices commissioned by theTurkish Ministry of Culture, Flight Box commissioned by Present Music for the opening of Santiago Calatravas new building for the Milwaukee Art Museum, and FEST for orchestra and new music ensemble, written for the orchestras of Milwaukee, Dayton, Albany and Present Music. His Symphony No. 5 Galatasaray celebrates the centenary of the Istanbul sports club of that name.
