HAMMERSCHMIDT, ANDREAS BIOGRAPHY(1611 - 1675)
Peter Maxwell Davies
Born to a family of Saxon origin in Bohemia, Andreas Hammerschmidt moved, after
the return of his native town to Catholicism, to Freiberg, where he was later
employed as organist at StPetri, before moving in 1639 to Zittau in a similar
position, remaining there until his death in 1675. He won a considerable reputation
as a composer, organist and teacher, his activities materially rewarded by the
Zittau city council.
Vocal Music
Hammerschmidt wrote a quantity of sacred music, including sacred concertos
in the style of the time and hymns. He published two collections of secular
vocal music and a third that also included sacred works.
