LANG, DAVID

(b 1957 )

David Lang’s music juxtaposes classical tradition with a contemporary urban musical idiom; his early works are often violent and rhythmically urgent, while more recently the reflective and incandescent elements of his style have gained prominence. He continually seeks ways of expanding existing genres, such as in the meditative amplified orchestral work The Passing Measures and the comic book opera The Carbon Copy Building, written in collaboration with cartoonist Ben Katchor and fellow composers Michael Gordon and Julia Wolfe. He collaborates regularly with major choreographers including Eduard Lock, Twyla Tharp, Susan Marshall and Shen Wei. Lang is co-founder of New York’s legendary Bang on a Can festival.
