TAN, DUN (b 1957 )
Tan Dun’s music is a genuine fusion of Eastern and Western cultures, and of traditional classical and multimedia presentation. During the Cultural Revolution in China he spent two years working in the rice fields, subsequently joining a Peking Opera group and enrolling at the Central Music Conservatory in Beijing. A scholarship from Columbia University brought him to New York in 1986 and he has since become associated with major organisations through Europe, the US and Asia, including the NHK/Suntory Hall, Netherlands Opera, the BBC Proms, the Berlin Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera. His many prestigious honours include the 1998 Grawemeyer Award for his opera Marco Polo.
